Work in Progress

I am currently working on a very special commission, a picture of baby George Farina. I started with photographs and I am working on a series of sketches in order to capture the very essence of him. I'll add to this page as I progress.

Portrait Commission - Stage 1

The Brief: This is a Memorial Portrait, to be taken from a favourite photograph.
It is important that the Client is entirely happy about which photograph they wish to be portrayed.
For this work there are two, so both will be sketched until I'm happy with the likeness, then submitted to the client to choose.
At this stage too, the client can suggest any alterations in the drawing, the small details that make a person unique to those who love them. After all, in this case it is their memory of the subject which is important.

Portrait Commission - Stage 2

Once the client is happy with the sketch, portrait size, and preferred background colour can be mutually agreed.
This work will leave the background paper showing, a 'vignette', giving no other distraction to the eye.
The use of a soft blue or blue/grey pastel paper will show, to best advantage, the pale and soft skin tones of the subject.
Pastel work begins.
