In another life I would have painted every day in a light, airy studio without a care… in reality, I have painted or drawn whenever feasible, since my childhood. After completing a Pre-diploma Foundation Course at Salisbury Art College, artistic pursuits took second place to raising a family. Over the last 10 years I have had more time to draw and paint. I have attended workshops in different media, and, for the last four years, regular classes with local artist Irene Timms; in Life and Portrait.
Encouraged by some success after exhibiting for the first time in 2003, I now exhibit regularly, and many of my paintings are in private collections. I was commissioned to illustrate two web sites and have received several portrait commissions, the most recent will be shown as a 'work in progress' on this site.
Faces, clouds, seas; certain colour combinations or a shape inspire my work. A butterfly wing, a silhouette, unfolding Dorset countryside or sometimes a title springs to mind and begs to be translated.
My love affair with pastel, as my preferred medium, continues to enthral. They are so incredibly versatile, such rich, vibrant colours, some of pure pigment, their velvety texture makes them a joy to use. Their immediacy makes them eminently suitable for both plein air painting and sketches. It is said that, compared with oils and watercolour, pastels show little deterioration over the years, Degas' beautiful collection of them proves the point. |
