Resizing an Image using Irfanview

Taking pictures with quality digital cameras can sometimes produce massive images. If you intend to email an image to a friend or use it in a project, whether for the web, or print, it will need to be resized and saved as a smaller file. This tutorial will show you how to do it using a freeware programme called Irfanview.

Step 1: Open up your Irfanview programme, then locate the image file you wish to resize.

Step 2: Click on the Image menu then click on Resize/ReSample (or hit Control+r) to bring up the Resize dialogue box.

Step 3: The Resize/Resample image dilaogue box appears, There are several ways of resizing in this box. This image shows resizing using the standard dimensions panel. If you are saving a picture for the web or emai or even as a desktop wallpaper, this is the best method, as you can specify the exact pixel dimensions. You see at the top left the Current size (original image) and the New size (the size your image will resize to).

Step 4: Another method is to use the 'Set new Percentage' radio button, or the 'Set New Size' radio button. Once satisfied click OK Remember at any time if you are not satisfied with the result you can simply hit Control+Z to undo the last command.

Step 5: You have resized your image, so go to the File Menu and click Save as...

Step 6: You may wish to rename your image at this point to a more manageable name, rather than the name the camera automatically gives it. Choose the quality of Jpeg you wish to save, click save you should now have the original image at full size and a resized one, with the correct name.
