Resizing an Image using Gimp

Taking pictures with quality digital cameras can sometimes produce massive images. If you intend to email an image to a friend or use it in a project, whether for the web, or print, it will need to be resized and saved as a smaller file. This tutorial will show you how to do it using a freeware programme called Gimp. If you need to download it, click on the icon below

Step 1: Open up your Gimp programme, then locate the image file you wish to resize.

Step 2: Click on the Image menu then click on Scale Image... to bring up the Resize dialogue box.

Step 3: The Scale Image dialogue box appears, There are several ways of resizing in this box. This image shows resizing using the width and height section. Simply choose which units you prefer (milimetres, pixels, inches etc) and then type in the new size. If you are saving a picture for the web or emai or even as a desktop wallpaper you can check how many pixels wide and high the image will be as the pixels are shown underneath the dimension input boxes. When satisfied click OK

Step 5: You have resized your image, so go to the File Menu and click Save as...

Step 6: You may wish to rename your image at this point to a more manageable name, rather than the name or number the camera automatically gives it. Click Save you should now have the original image at full size, and a resized one, with the correct name.
