Resize Jpegs with Adobe Photoshop

Taking pictures with digital cameras can sometimes produce massive files. If you intend to email them to a friend or use them in a project, they will need to be resized and saved as a smaller file. This tutorial will show you how to do it using Adobe Photoshop. The tutorial is designed to be used on a PC but if you are working on a Mac simply use the apple/command key instead of the control key.

Step 1: Open up your Adobe Photoshop programme, then locate and open the image file you wish to resize. This image is direct from a digital camera, the current size is 2592 x 1944 pixels, or 91.44 x 68.58cm, that is almost 1 metre wide in a physical sense. This is far too cumbersome a file so we'll resize it to make it more manageable.

Step 2: Click on the Image Menu and then click on Image Size...

Step 3: In this instance I have left the resolution at 72 pixel/inch, and changed the size from 91.44cm wide to 20cm. This will drastically reduce the size, going from 14.4mB to 706kb.

Step 4: Alternatively, if you require a high quality image, untick Resample Image then type 300 into the Resolution field. This will resample the image but leave the file size intact. 300 pixels/inch is the standard resolution for high quality printing.
